Here's an experiment. Instead of networking to find out what someone can do for you, don't think about yourself. Give, give, give. The result of giving is to create such a degree of goodwill that potential associates will line up to do business with you.

I have been fortunate-the result of years of hard work, sacrifice, and breaks. By far, I have received my biggest breaks by networking. But what of the men, women, and children who pound the hot sidewalks of Los Angeles begging for money? Clearly, they haven't had the breaks that I have. Still, they must eat. They need clothes and personal items.

Every day when I go to work downtown I make it my personal mission to hand out some much-needed personal items and snacks to homeless people in the area. Other concerned individuals or business organizations can join in the effort in person or by donating to a worthwhile charity. And interestingly, as more people get involved, new opportunities for networking develop. It's a win-win all around.

So...just give, give, and give some more, and don't ever think about yourself. I have a hunch you'll be amazed at the results.

FOOD ON FOOT

FOOD ON FOOT is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the poor and homeless of Los Angeles with nutritious meals, clothing and assistance in the transition to employment and life off the streets.

FOOD ON FOOT operates a weekly meal program every Sunday. It began in March 1996 as one man's response (Jay Goldinger) to the hunger he witnessed among the poor and homeless of Hollywood. What initially began as the distribution of meals from the trunk of a car has grown through the dedication of its volunteers and now serves more than 500 meals each week to homeless, disabled, elderly and low-income adults and children.

FOR THE TROOPS

The simple mission of FOR THE TROOPS is to send care packages to frontline U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Founded by Paula Cornell and Janie Josephson, FOR THE TROOPS has sent off more than 6,000 care packages to date. If you know someone serving our country in Iraq or Afghanistan, please contact FOR THE TROOPS with a name and address. DUBNOFF CENTER FOR CHILD DEVELOPMENT

The Dubnoff Center for Child Development is a unique full-service educational and clinical agency committed to seriously challenged children and youth and their families for whom there are no other appropriate programs.

Established in 1948, the Dubnoff Center nurtures the unique potential in each child with developmental, emotional and/or behavioral challenges. The center specializes in providing integrated educational, clinical and vocational services that instill self-reliance, self-respect and pride so that children and their families can lead more productive lives.

Most children are referred by their local school district. Clients include at-risk children, foster-care youth and wards of the state, ages 5 to 22; children with multiple emotional, behavioral and learning histories who may have experienced repeated school failure; and normally developing preschool aged children from low-income families, ages 3 to 5.

THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is committed to finding cures for leukemia and other blood-related diseases and improving the lives of those affected. LLS funds lifesaving cancer research that has contributed to major advances in the treatment of blood cancers and many other types of cancer treatments. New targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal tissue, through drugs and other procedures, are improving the quality of life for many.

On average, it takes about 7 years after a mental illness emerges to get care

I didn't know any of this until someone I loved became ill. With therapy and medication, days of darkness gradually turned bright. But, millions of children and adults in Los Angeles County don't have the resources we have. For them DIDI HIRSCH COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH CENTER is a lifeline. I am proud to serve on its Board of Directors.

A non-profit founded in 1942, Didi Hirsch serves communities where stigma and poverty limit access. At nine sites across the County, its many programs include child abuse treatment; school-based mental health counseling; support groups for caregivers of older adults; employment assistance for adults with serious mental illness; outreach to the homeless; and residential substance abuse treatment for women and their children. More than 40,000 people are served each year, including the 20,000 who call our 24-hour suicide crisis line. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, our Suicide Prevention Center was the first in the nation.

Largely funded by the County and State, the demand for Didi Hirsch's services greatly exceeds its funding, especially in hard times. Like now, when government cuts, coupled with rising costs and unemployment rates, create even greater vulnerability. THE LATINO SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT CORP.

The Latino Scholastic Achievement Corporation (LSAC) is an educational non-profit 501.c.3 founded in 1992 to reverse the trend of 96 percent of Latino college students leaving college without a four year degree. The program was expanded in 1998 to include all underrepresented youth in Southern California. The number of low income, at-risk students that have participated in the Latino Scholastic Achievement Corporation academic achievement programs and conferences is now in the tens of thousands.

In 2004, the LSAC received the support of the Walt Disney Company, La Agencia de Orci, and PlanetaTV.com, among others, to design and create a bilingual video and audio broadband system and offer educational programming through its web site.
